Scouts return to nenagh
After a hiatus of several years, moves are now afoot to revive the Scouts in Nenagh.
Many will have fond memories of being part of the old '2nd Tipperary' group at Nenagh's Scouts Hall but, and in spite of its size, the town has no longer has a Scouts organisation.
A new committee has now formed with the aim of getting the Scouts going again in 2015 with the help of the local community. Affiliated with Scouting Ireland, the committee members have already gone through the requisite initial training and plan to be up and running early in the new year.
The committee intends to cater for three age categories of girls and boys: Beavers (ages 6-8), Cubs (9-11) and Scouts (12-15). The Beavers are taken on camping trips and partake in a wide range of games and activities organised by the adult 'Leaders'. Cubs are given more responsibility to plan their own events and also learn about community care and environmental issues. The more senior Scouts have further say in event planning and are instilled with a sense of leadership; they also have the opportunity to go on trips abroad.
With over 40,000 members across Ireland, Scouting Ireland is geared towards young people seeking a new challenge beyond the conventional activities and sports. There is a strong emphasis on outdoor adventure activities such as hiking and orienteering but also a focus on physical, mental and spiritual development. Scout groups around the country regularly meet up for games, excursions and seminars in an organisation that encourages social interaction and cooperation between young people.
The local committee is hoping to have 18-24 young people in each of the three defined groups and is appealing for adults to come forward as 'Leaders'. The more Leaders, the more young people that can be involved in Nenagh Scouts.
Anyone who volunteers as a Leader will be guaranteed a place for their child. Leaders will undergo comprehensive training with Scouting Ireland, inclusive of garda vetting and a child protection course.
The Nenagh Scouts committee will hold a registration night in early January. Anyone who would like to get involved as a Leader or help out in any way is asked to contact Caroline Mounsey on 086-3554621.
