€7 million housing allocation for Tipperary

Minister for the Environment, Community & Local Government Alan Kelly has announced the approval of over €7million worth of public house building for County Tipperary.
The news will create an estimated 70 jobs throughout the county and is part of the first phase of housing investment for the county, which will see approximately €57 million invested in various housing supports for Tipperary.
The Department of Environment is currently assessing a number of building projects submitted from Tipperary County Council with further investment expected to be announced later in the year. The move is part of a construction kick-off, with Minister Kelly announcing the commencement of over 100 social housing projects throughout the country.
Clonmel will see the largest building boost with 20 houses approved at a council owned site on the Glencannor Road, which will commence subject to planning approval. Cashel will also see 10 units built at Waller's Lot, with further projects in Cloughjordan, Thurles, Templemore and Gortnahoe. Three uinits are to be built in Cloughjordan at a cost of €430,000.
Minister Kelly has targeted reducing the housing waiting list in Tipperary by 40% by 2017 based on the most recent housing needs assessment carried out in the county in 2013. The new construction units will be expected to be in place by 2017.
“This is the first major house-building programme in Tipperary for many years,” Minister Kelly stated.
“It forms one part of the €57 million housing investment already announced with more construction projects expected. We have an excellent skill-base of builders in Tipperary and many of them are seeking work at the moment so this should provide a welcome boost.
“Housing is the number one priority for this Government and people in Tipperary will benefit from both the economic investment and the provision of housing once it comes on stream.”
