Faster broadband for rural tipp

Over 41,000 rural homes and businesses in Tipperary stand to benefit from the launch of eircom's higher speed broadband programme for rural Ireland.
Local homes stand to benefit from speeds up to 1,000Mb/s under the plan, which would see over 5,400km of fibre rolled out across rural Tipperary.
Nenagh and Roscrea have been included in eircom’s existing 1,000Mb/s FTTH (Fibre To The Home) rollout programme, and will be amongst the first areas in the country to receive 100% direct fibre service from eircom as part of an ongoing €10m investment programme in the county.
Eircom, Ireland’s largest telecommunications provider, this month launched its proposed solution to the Irish Government’s tender to bring high-speed broadband to rural Ireland, which is due to issue in late 2015.
Approximately 41,000 homes and businesses in rural Tipperary currently lie in areas within the National Broadband Plan intervention footprint, and stand to benefit from eircom’s proposed rural fibre broadband solution. These homes and businesses are typically one-off premises in areas not currently in scope to receive high-speed broadband.
For the vast majority of these homes and businesses, the broadband supplied by eircom, if successful in the National Broadband Plan tender, would be FTTH - 100% direct fibre connection. This would enable speeds of 1,000Mb/s, the fastest speeds in Ireland and comparable with any broadband network globally.
With a 1,000Mb/s connection, consumers can download a high definition film in less than a minute and business users will have bandwidth capacity to transfer applications and large data files at rates previously only available to large enterprises.
A small percentage of premises in very remote areas would receive high-speed broadband over wireless technology, at a minimum speed of 30Mb/s, significantly faster than current wireless speeds.
The network would be “open access” so that any telecom provider could offer high-speed services to homes and businesses.
Under the National Broadband Plan, the first homes will be connected in 2016, with the final homes expected to be connected by 2020. Pricing for broadband products will be the same in rural areas as they are in urban locations. The announcement of eircom’s proposed rural fibre rollout comes as its existing over €10 million commercial broadband rollout in Tipperary continues to make significant progress.
By the end of 2016, eircom will have rolled out high-speed broadband to approximately 42,000 homes and businesses in 43 communities across Tipperary.
