Cooperative workshop in cloughjordan
A co-operative approach to facilitating local enterprises, creating meaningful livelihoods and making our communities flourish will be the subject of a workshop that takes place in Cloughjordan, Tipperary on Friday June 5th.
Community ownership and cooperative enterprise has taken off in recent years with a number of examples of the approach emerging in the area. Mary Fogarty and Maeve O’Hair established the Cottage, the award winning community tearoom and shop in Loughmore, using a community ownership model with support from ICOS, the Plunkett Foundation and the North Tipperary Leader Partnership. There are many other examples of co-operative initiatives in community farming, housing and car sharing at the Cloughjordan Ecovillage.
Energy Communities Tipperary is a successful and growing energy conservation scheme run cooperatively that is already saving energy, leveraging investment into rural areas and creating employment in the region. Community-owned wind farms and community wind energy cooperatives are already commonplace in Germany however Ireland has only one, which is located in Templederry. The Tipperary Energy Agency, who are actively promoting community energy schemes, are working with Aran Island’s Energy Cooperative to further efforts in achieving energy independence for the islands over the next 10 years.
The community cooperative event takes place at the WeCreate Enterprise Centre in Cloughjordan, Tipperary on Friday June 5th from 10am. For full details of the event or if you have an idea for the Get Involved contest email Davie Philip on davie@cultivate.ie
