Kennedy family display in Nenagh
An Irish Kennedy Heritage Group display is now on view at Nenagh Heritage Centre.
The Kennedys and their forebears have been in the Nenagh area for at least a thousand years. The late Dr Dermot Gleeson wrote: “It is to be feared that the direct descendants of the former O'Kennedy 'lords of Ormond' have largely forgotten the proud story and heritage of their ancestors.”
The Irish Kennedy Heritage Group has been established to ensure that the history of the Kennedys is commemorated. All Irish Kennedys and their descendants now have a reference point in the geographical centre of their ancient territory.
The display consists of documents relating to the history of the O'Kennedys together with ancestry charts and a series of books about the Irish Kennedys. Kennedys with historical family documents and charts are invited to submit them for inclusion in the display.
Many thanks to Nora O'Meara of Nenagh Heritage Centre and Phyllis Kennedy of Garnafana, Toomevara, secretary of the Irish Kennedy Heritage Group, for their work in getting this display established.
Nenagh Heritage Centre is located in the Governor's House, Kickham Street, and is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.
