Street works taking place this year at Pearse St.

Nenagh street works on schedule

Ervia's multi-utility project to provide gas, water and wastewater services in Nenagh remains on schedule, with gas connections already available at several locations around town.

Most work on the €17 million project has ended now until after Christmas. To date, the Ervia project has installed 2.7km of the 4.2km of water main in the town, with 1.5km of this serving residential properties and businesses. In 2017 it is planned to complete the installation of the remaining 1.5km of water main while also completing the service connections to residential properties and businesses.

In addition to this, some 8.5km of gas mains have been laid in the town, providing residents and businesses in these areas with the opportunity to connect to the gas network.

This is a very significant construction project right through the centre of Nenagh town, which has involved digging trenches at depths of up to four metres with ongoing archaeological monitoring. All large scale trench digging work has now been completed for Kenyon St, Pearse St and Kickham St. New wastewater connections have been delivered to all businesses and residents on Kenyon Street, significantly helping to alleviate odour and flooding issues in that area of the town centre.

New gas and water mains have also been installed as part of these works.

Another significant engineering challenge that was successfully completed was the construction of a new wastewater pipeline under the Clareen stream. The old sewer culvert, running all along Kenyon Street, has been decommissioned and filled in with concrete.

Other important milestones reached to date include the upgrading of the combined sewer on Pearse Street as well as the replacement of the Kickham St sewer. The Kickham St sewer has been replaced from the junction of Pearse St up to Banba Square. Further works from Banba Square to the courthouse section of the sewer system are scheduled to take place early in the New Year. These works are however expected to be internal works only with limited disruption to the public.

Works centred on the wastewater system at the top of Kickham St before pausing for the Christmas period. Following this, works are planned for Stafford Street Lower in January.

Acknowledging the cooperation of local business owners and residents, Construction Manager Brendan McDermott said: “We are very conscious of the inevitable disruption caused by a project of this scale and would like to once again to thank the people of Nenagh and the Nenagh Chamber of Commerce for their patience and cooperation as we continue to deliver gas, wastewater and water services in the town.

“We have had fantastic cooperation from people as the project has progressed and we are continuing to work closely with all businesses and residents to best manage traffic management and signage, on a continuous basis. Although there is some unavoidable disruption in the short term, this is a project which will deliver economic and social benefits to Nenagh for many years to come.”

A number of streets will benefit from complete road reconstruction following the completion of wastewater works, including Kenyon St, Pearse St, Kickham St and Friar St. Bus routes have also returned to normal following some temporary disruption to accommodate the works.

The €17 million project will see over 40km of gas pipelines laid, alongside 4.2km of water mains and 1.5km of wastewater mains. It is due to be complete by mid-summer 2017, leading to significant social and economic benefits for Nenagh.

In 2017, works will take place in the following sequence: Stafford St, Friar Street, Abbey Street, Martyr’s Road, Dublin Road.

Construction works are ongoing on outlying streets in Nenagh with the installation of the water service connections being carried out on the Thurles road, Ormond St/Summer Hill and Ashe Rd over the coming months. Additionally, gas mains and water mains will be installed in Emmet Place and Silver St in 2017.

Street closures will continue to be advertised by Tipperary County Council with alternative routes agreed and signposted. Details of street closures are also available on www.gasnetworks.ie/roadworks

Ervia advises that gas connections are available in the following locations: Limerick Rd (from Stereame entrance to Clare St), Clare St, Yewston estate (partially only), Cudville, St Conlon’s Rd (Cudville junction to Gortlandroe Industrial Estate), Ashe Road (partially available), O’Rahilly St, Melrose estate, New Line, Borrisokane Rd (as far as ABP Meats), Ormond St, Summerhill, Church Road, St Flannan’s St, Pearse St, Kenyon St, Stafford St, Silver Street (from William St junction to Stafford St Junction) and William St (partially).
