Cloughjordan project shortlisted for national award

The Cloughjordan Community Development Committee has been shortlisted in the 'Get Involved' national competition for their Community Wetlands Project at Scohaboy Bog.

This is one of six projects in the nationwide competition to achieve this. Last week saw the competition judges visit Cloughjordan to see first-hand the community-supported project and meet members of local community groups involved.

The Wetlands Project at Scohaboy Bog sees the restoration of a unique raised bog habitat and development of walkways and trails for local and visitor use. Scohaboy Bog NHA is of considerable conservation significance, representing some of the last remnants of this habitat still in existence in the Atlantic region of the EU and, as such, it is a site of European and international importance.

Scohaboy Bog is a National Demonstration Site in the Coillte LIFE programme and the Cloughjordan Community Development Committee are the 'community partners' with Coillte Forest and the National Parks and Wildlife Service in the project 'Demonstrating Best Practice in Raised Bog Restoration in Ireland'.

At the Scohaboy Bog/Sopwell Woodlands site, the aims are to develop a unique natural heritage attraction along the Beara-Breifne National Waymarked Heritage Trail, one that will connect into the Irelands’ Ancient East trail as well as offering a quality amenity asset for the North Tipperary/South Offaly area.

The Get Involved competition is a Local Ireland newspaper initiative in conjunction with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland. The Cloughjordan project is supported by the Nenagh Guardian.

The winning projects will be announced at a ceremony in Dublin this Thursday.
