Women’s Rugby World Cup comes to Ballina/Killaloe RFC
The Women’s Rugby World cup continued its journey around the country stopping in Ballina/Killaloe RFC last Wednesday night May 24th.
This was a very special occasion as girls rugby has really taken off this year in both St. Anne’s Community College as well as Ballina/Killaloe RFC. There are over 65 girls playing rugby within the school with the club now catering for U13, U15 and U18 with the hope to extend to an Adult female team come September.
The world cup was met by members of all three teams last night and the excitement of meeting Irish rugby stars Niamh Briggs and Niamh Kavanagh made the occasion a very special one. Both International players stood in for pictures with the local girls and also answered questions and played some rugby with them. Cathaoirleach of Nenagh Municipal District, Dr Phyll Bugler, was also in attendance and spoke highly of the number of girls participating in women’s rugby in the club. She spoke about the importance of women’s participation in sport and encouraged the girls to continue with sport to help relieve exam stress.
Thank you to all involved in getting the World Cup trophy to Ballina/Killaloe and the girls look forward to attending the Irish teams game on August 9th in UCD to cheer on Niamh Briggs and the rest of the Irish team.
