Famine ending tip to Killarney to be remembered 30 years on
1987 will live long in the memory of Tipperary supporters as the year the ‘Famine’ ended as was so eloquently put by captain Richard Stakelum on the day the Premier County won the Munster senior hurling final in Killarney, ending a barren sixteen year wait for success.
It took a replay to separate old rivals Cork and Tipperary. Under the direction and guidance of Michael 'Babs' Keating, Theo English and Donie Nealon, Tipperary ended their long wait for silverware and started an exciting era which resulted in two All Ireland's and five Munster titles under that managemant team.
Now approaching the 30th anniversary of this famous win, Thurles Sports Festival have arranged a night to remember this landmark occasion. A panel of Tipperary hurling legends will look back on 1987 and the lead up to the match, some old stories will be recalled and a discussion will also take place on how hurling teams prepare for big games in 2017.
This free event will take place on Wednesday 12th July in the Davin Room of Hayes Hotel, Thurles at 8pm. The speakers include: Ken Hogan (goalkeeper), Michael Doyle (scorer of two goals in game); Michael Cleary, Donie Nealon (selector), along with the 2016 All Ireland winning captain Brendan Maher.
This event will be chaired by Stevie O’Donnell of Tipperary Mid West Radio while Noel Dundon, author of ‘Captains of the Premier Ship’ will open the evening with a look back on the key moments of the Munster Final Campaign in 1987.
“This is really an evening when we look back with great pride on that famous day in Killarney 1987 when the ‘Famine ended’,” said event organiser Tommy Barrett.
“We are honoured to have a host of Tipperary legends both past and present joining us on the night to speak about their experiences in the blue and gold jersey. Current Tipperary Hurler Brendan Maher will also speak on the night about how GAA players prepare for matches today, of course Brendan is involved in the very successful Holycross Gym in his spare time.
“This is a night not to be missed by all Tipperary supporters; we look forward to welcoming you to the birthplace of the GAA on Wednesday 12th July.”
