Garda warning to holidaymakers

House break-ins were reported in Roscrea and Nenagh in recent days. It is understood that windows were left open while the occupants were away in both cases. Gardaí have arrested a suspect in relation to the Nenagh break-in and that individual is now before the courts.

Gardaí are advising people going on holidays or leaving their homes vacant for long periods to take precautionary steps. Leave a key with a neighbour or someone who can call to collect post or bring in any milk deliveries. Someone should also switch on lights, cut grass and move cars around if possible to give the impression that the home is occupied. Gardaí are warning that burglars are on the lookout for vacant properties during the holiday season.

Mobile phone campaign

Nenagh gardaí will be stepping up measures against people driving while using mobile phones this weekend.

There is strong evidence that mobile phone use by drivers is a major contributory factor in increasing distraction that can lead to an increased risk of collisions. Driver distraction is thought to play a role in 20-30% of all road collisions, and using a mobile phone can increase the risk of being in a road collision up to four times.

As part of a national campaign, gardaí in the Nenagh district say they will be monitoring motorists for mobile phone use and offenders will face penalties.

Meanwhile the campaign against drink driving is continuing in the district. A male was arrested on suspicion of drink driving at Fortmoy, Aglish, last weekend.

Disturbance in Roscrea

Three males were arrested following a disturbance in Roscrea's town centre last weekend.

Gardaí received a number of calls regarding an incident on the main street shortly after midnight on Sunday. They found a male with no shirt attempting to gain entry to a public house.

Three males were arrested on Castle St. It is understood that gardaí had to deploy pepper spray during the incident.
