Nenagh Polish population at 8.5%
Polish people account for 8.5% of the population of Nenagh, according to new census data published recently.
A total of 760 Poles declared Nenagh as their town of usual residence in the 2016 Census. As is the case with most Irish towns, Polish people make up Nenagh's largest non-Irish grouping.
They are followed by Lithuanian (182), UK (152), Latvian (129) and Romanian (119) nationals, while the number of respondents of Not Stated or No Nationality in Nenagh stood at 164. The total population recorded for Nenagh in 2016 was 8,917.
Roscrea, with a total population of 5,440, also had a high proportion of Polish nationals at 199. A larger number of 297 respondents were recorded as 'Other EU' in the Census. Roscrea also had high numbers of Lithuanian (158), UK (80) and Latvian (59) nationals.
Polish people accounted for 137 of Ballina's total population of 2,618 but only 36 of the 1,988 people resident in Newport, where the largest non-Irish grouping were UK nationals (44).
According to the new data published last week by the Central Statistics Office, Polish people made up around 2.5% (4,071) of the total population in Tipperary in 2016, a slight decrease from the 2011 Census (4,205). There was a larger number of UK nationals (4,104) in Tipperary last year.
The CSO found a total of 535,475 non-Irish nationals living in the country, a 1.6% decrease on the 2011 figure of 544,357. The numbers of people holding dual citizenship (Irish-other country) increased by 87.4% to 104,784 persons.
The 535,475 non-Irish nationals living in Ireland in April 2016 came from 200 different nations. Polish nationals were the largest group with 122,515 persons followed by 103,113 UK nationals and 36,552 Lithuanians.
