Suaimhneas art exhibition at Nenagh Library
For the month of March, Suaimhneas Cancer Support Centre will host an art exhibition at Nenagh Library.
The public will have an opportunity to view and purchase some of the pieces of art painted by friends of Suaimhneas.
Director of Services of Suaimhneas Anne Gleeson said: “Art therapy is one of the many complementary therapies held at Suaimhneas. The group not only focuses on creativity and art alone, it also encourages interaction and consensus and promotes healing through friendship and support for those going through challenging times.
“This art exhibition is also an opportunity to inform the public of the services we provide at the centre and also shows the creativity of our group. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our art facilitator, Mary O’Reilly, who has given a huge commitment of her time so selflessly since the centre opened nine years ago. She has given confidence, energy, encouragement and emotional support to the group.”
The art facilitator at Suaimhneas, Mary O’Reilly said: “The art group endeavours to provide a space where people can relax, socialise and express themselves. Engaging with the creative process helps to re-engage with our imagination, become more aware of the natural world and find contentment and hope in the world we live in.
“The group is very informal and encourages every person to learn a new skill, develop at their own pace and produce a finished painting they can be very proud of. Participation in the group helps people to self-develop, enhance their self-esteem, and find peace and contentment in the process. The emotional support and bonds formed within the group have helped those involved to deal effectively and collectively with personal difficulties they may have experienced or be experiencing in the present,” said Mary.
Suaimhneas Cancer Support Centre offers emotional support, practical help and information in a safe, positive, non-clinical and confidential environment for those living with cancer or affected by it, including bereavement. All of the services are provided free of charge to the clients. The centre is funded and managed by North Tipperary Hospice Movement.
The services provided at the Suaimhneas Cancer Support Centre are counselling (individual and family), holistic and complementary therapies, and mindfulness yoga and art group.
Ann Gleeson also wished to take the opportunity to thank Nenagh Library for facilitating this exhibition. All proceeds from the exhibition will be used to purchase art materials.
