Feature about Sam Maguire part of the GAA's Summer School
There’s more known about the Sam Maguire as a trophy than there is about the man behind Ireland’s most famous piece of silverware. That’s all about to change thanks to the theme of this year’s GAA Museum Summer School that tales places on Saturday June 30th at Croke Park.
‘Sam Maguire – The Man and the Trophy’ sees a line-up of distinguished speakers visit Croke Park for a fascinating day of talks and discussions. 2018 marks the 90th anniversary of the Sam Maguire Cup first being presented to the winners of the All-Ireland senior football championship. This unique event will explore the life and times of Sam Maguire and examine the Ireland and London in which he lived.
Lining out for the Summer School are Dr. William Murphy from DCU who will look at Ireland during the period 1877 – 1926, Dr. Richard McElligott who will present a much-anticipated paper on the GAA from 1884 to 1926 and Dr. Darragh Gannon from Queen’s University Belfast who whose lecture is entitled ‘Cork days, London nights: the lives and afterlives of Sam Maguire’.
