Fourth placed finish for North Tipp in Gaynor Cup
North Tipperary's Under 14 Girls Soccer squad proved themselves to be among the best in the country at last weeks FAI Gaynor Cup, held at the Fota Island resort in Cork.
In the sixteen team competition, North Tipperary were drawn in group 4 and got underway last Thursday against Donegal where they won 2-1 with Chelsea King and Abbie Linehan on target. Later in the day, North Tipp recorded a 1-0 win over Cork with Abbie Linehan grabbing the winner in the second half.
North Tipp backed it up with another slender 1-0 win over neighbours South Tipperary on Friday with Linehan again scoring the decisive goal after just three minutes.
It put North Tipperary into a semi-final against Kilkenny last Saturday. Kilkenny started the brighter and were 2-0 with 15 minutes played. North Tipp upped their performance in the second half and played some good football at times and were unlucky not to score a goal.
However, North Tipperary still had one game to play against Carlow for 3rd/4th place on Sunday. Carlow started the stronger and were 2-0 up at half time, with one of their goals from a free kick being the highlight. North Tipp had a much improved second half performance and were unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions.
This brought down the curtain on our Gaynor Tournament where North Tipperary finished fourth overall, their highest ever position since the competition started in the league form in 2011.
