Cabras complete Magical Guilfoyle double act at Longford
A one week delay to the final of the prestigious Wallace & Murray Longford Derby Final proved no hindrance to the challenge of trainer Pat Guilfoyle who guided a brace of Paul Scally owned stars to a remarkable final forecast in a thrilling €10,000 showdown on Friday.
Flawless in the heats, both Cabra Hurricane and Cabra Twister entered the final unbeaten and while local support craved a one-two, clearly something had to give. Thankfully however, a primary wish that the best early pacers would race cleanly at the opening bends did come true and it was Twister who just showed in front to the corner.
Ranging alongside however, Hurricane galloped the bends best when eye-catchingly claiming the lead and he would power to a near three length halfway advantage. Very strong at the 550 yard trip, he was sure to come under late pressure from his companion and so it materialised that Cabra Twister did close in the home-straight.
Remaining resolute out front however, Cabra Hurricane completed with three quarters of a length to spare over his game kennelmate in 29.88 (-20) as Cabra Twister repelled Jaytee Charlie for second which saw Thurles owner Paul Scally pillage the bulk of the event’s prize fund.
