Reliving bog heritage in Terryglass
“It was nothing only hardship.”
That is the nearly always the first reaction when people are asked about their memories of the bog. Despite that initial reaction, the stories and the memories come flooding back, and they're not all hardship either!
So, this Saturday, July 28th, Kilbarron Terryglass Historical Society, with the support of Tipperary Co Council, will hold a talk, walk, exhibition and demonstration on the life, culture and heritage of the bog
.
Kate Flood, ecologist, who has a special interest in the Girley Bog Project in Co Meath, will join the Society for the day. The day will begin with an exhibition in the village hall in Terryglass followed by an introduction on the formation of the bog and bog life by Kate Flood at 12 noon. There will be a break at 1pm for an half an hour for lunch.
At 1.30pm we will pool cars and head to Lacken Bog via the Roran road. Here there will be a guided tour of the bog, which will include the flora and fauna, and also remembering those that once lived in the area.
This will be followed at 3pm by a demonstration of cutting turf with the Slean by Basil Leenane and turning and footing the turf. At 4pm, we return again to the hall for refreshments and maybe even more memories.
We hope that as many people as possible will be able to attend and relive some happy memories of the bog and the vital part it played and plays in our lives.
