McCarthy injury worry for Sarsfields and Tipperary
Tipperary senior hurler Billy McCarthy could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining an horrific leg injury in a club game last week.
McCarthy dislocated his knee after falling awkwardly after scoring a goal for Thurles Sarsfields in their Mid Tipperary senior hurling championship semi-final win over JK Brackens in Templetuohy last Wednesday.
The powerful half forward ran onto a pass and broke a very rash challenge from JK Brackens Aidan Fitzpatrick before driving a shot to the roof of the net. However, in falling to the ground after losing his balance, he suffered major knee damage with teammates and opponents both turning away in horror and immediately signaling to the sideline for assistance for the stricken Sarsfields player.
McCarthy was taken from the field on a stretcher and then by ambulance to Waterford Regional Hospital where the knee was put back into place. However, the full extent of potential further damage to ligaments or cartilage is not yet clear and his involvement in the rest of this year's county championship is in doubt.
