Compensation for Mysloegin at Tramore opening

Mysloegin, from the Borrisokane yard of Jimmy Finn who lost out by a whisker at Sligo the previous week, gained some measure of compensation when battling well to land the two mile and five novice hurdle at the opening session of the Tramore festival meeting on Thursday.

A well supported favourite, the daughter of Golden Tornado raced just behind the leaders early on but as there was little or no pace rider, Rachael Blackmore decided to take the sting out of some of the fast finishers by sending the six-year-old into the lead after jumping the second flight of hurdles. Coming down the hill to the straight for the final time the challengers began to line up behind her, however, it was then that Ms Blackmore played her trump card as she kicked for home and took a few lengths out of the field. Barry Geraghty aboard Smitty Bacall cut into the lead but after a good scrap Mysloegin pulled out plenty to prevail by half a length.

This was a smart performance by the winner. Her hurdling was fast as well as being accurate and at the end of the day her proven stamina was her biggest asset. In his post race remarks, Jimmy Finn gave Ms Blackmore plenty of praise as she had the courage to dispense of Plan A and ride the race as she thought best. The trainer has nothing set in stone for his charge but since she has had a couple of quick runs he is inclined to give her a short break and return for an Autumn campaign.
