Knitters: Arise and pick up your needles!
This year's Nenagh Christmas Tree Festival will be December 12-16th, and part of the plan for it is to have a Festival Christmas Tree of its own.
This will be made of knitted or crocheted squares and ornaments — we need your help to make it come true! This has been done successfully in other countries but this is our chance to do it here. The tree in the picture is an example of what we mean, although ours will be unique to us.
This is your chance to use up bits and pieces of yarn. If you have green of any shade, that can be a square to help create the tree. If you have other colours, make ornaments to go on the tree. Green squares for the tree should be approximately 6-8” or 15-20cm square. Slightly larger or smaller is fine but that is a manageable size. There is no set style or type of yarn requirement. The larger ones will form the base of the tree, with squares getting progressively smaller towards the top.
December 1st is the cut-off date and we will make the tree with whatever we have. Next year, knit more squares and we will make a bigger tree. We plan to build a new tree every year with more and more squares and ornaments and who knows where it will all end?
Sinead at Black Sheep Wool at 41 Pearse Street in Nenagh (10am-2pm) has kindly volunteered to serve as a collection centre for your squares and ornaments as you finish them. If you want company, a knitting and crochet group meets there on Fridays from 11am-1pm and a group meets in the Nenagh Library on the third Wednesday of every month at 11am.
