Hurricane hits Waterford in sizzling Select Stakes return
As the major events on the Open race scene begin to draw to a close for the 2018 season, this Saturday brings the last of the traditional classics with the final of the Irish St Leger at Limerick while the Moneygall kennels of Pat Gulilfoyle prepared for the upcoming Night Of Stars with the reappearance of Cabra Hurricane (Kinloch Brae/Cabra Ebony) at Waterford.
The Derby semi-finalist was in action for the first round of the Gain Greyhound Nutrition Select 525 Yard Stakes and scored a most impressive success on a track which ideally suits his racing style. Never draw dependent, he bore a middle seed for the first time in his career and that application may become more permanent as it appeared to suit ideally when trapping on terms, he proceeded to dominate throughout a high quality contest.
One of the most proficient early pacers of the modern era, he held a near three length lead at the opening corner when in advance of Droopys Steel and Holycross Lad. Extending to the back-straight, he would reduce the race to a virtual procession despite ceding minor ground late on.
Three lengths in advance of Paraic Campion’s strong staying Boozed Blue, he posted a smart 28.57 and can be expected to progress for that return in this week’s semi-final where he will occupy Trap 5.
