Shane Mulcahy rode Fleuries Fort to victory at Thurles

Young causes major upset at Thurles

Leslie Young, who trains between Templemore and Roscrea, is well used to sending out long priced winners and he did again at Thurles on Thursday when he saddled Fleuries Fort to land the two mile and four 88-114 handicap hurdle at odds of 16/1.

Given a peach of a ride by 7lb claimer Shane Mulcahy, the eight-year-old Fleuries Fort took time to warm to his task as Authorative set a decent pace. The latter had everything off the bridle turning for home and looked poised for victory until Mulcahy produced Fleuries Fort with a storming run after the final light to get up in the final strides and land the spoils by half a length.

Bred by his owner Margaret Marshall, the winner was not scoring out of turn and the same could be said of his trainer who revealed that the horse was having his last run before going home for the winter. Connections will now have to rethink that decision in the hope that they might be able to conjure up another success for the six time winner while the ground is reasonably good for the time of year.
