Barna venture scores for Hogan and Mulcahy at Thurles
Denis Hogan and his 7lb claiming rider Shane Mulcahy are becoming a useful combination and they struck again at Thurles on Thursday when taking the two mile and two 72-102 handicap chase with Barna Venture.
A lightly raced gelding, the son of Trans Island had a following at fancy prices in the betting market in spite of the confidence behind Davy Russell's mount Fairymount Boy. Mulcahy threw down the gauntlet to the rest of the field right from the drop of the flag by sending his mount straight into the lead and although headed leaving the back straight regained the advantage before the second last fence and stayed on strongly to defeat Fairymount Boy by four lengths.
In his post race remarks, Denis Hogan was full of praise for Mulcahy whom he described as a great grafter who is improving as much as the horse. Owned and bred by the trainers neighbour Brid Collison, the winner can be difficult at times, especially getting him to the start but Mulcahy gets on well with him which is half the battle and connections are confident that he can add to this success.
