February flag drop for Nenagh Point to Point
It's that time of year again when all lovers of horse racing in come together for the running of the North Tipperary Foxhounds Point-to-Point meeting in Lisboney, Nenagh next Sunday.
This year the event takes place three weeks later than usual having been put back from the last Sunday in January which had been its traditional date for many years, bar weather related postponements.
The aim of this was to try and include a race for four-year-olds who aren't allowed race until after February 1st but that didn't materialise, however, organisers are confident they will have such a race in next years meeting.
Weather conditions at this stage don't appear as bad for the meeting with the going good at the moment. Entries are well up on 2018 with 110 horses already entered with the likelihood that the first race of the six race card will have to be divided with 34 horses declared for the liambuckleycarsales.com Maiden for five-year-old geldings which gets the action underway at 1.00pm.
Races continue on the half hour, including the Tattersalls Ireland Maiden for six-year-old geldings, Carey Glass Winners of One race; Connolly's Red Mills Open for Lady riders; Local trainers Maiden for seven-year-old geldings with Millerect Maiden for five-year-old novice mares, wrapping up the card at 3.30pm.
A point to point is a form of horse-racing over fences for hunting horses and amateur riders and this form of racing has a great tradition in this area, one of just two point to point meetings held in North Tipperary each year with the Ormond Hunt hosting their annual two-day meeting on the May Bank Holiday weekend.
The Nenagh point-to-point has always had a good base support with racing set to get underway at 1.00pm on Sunday in Lisboney, just across from the graveyard. Parking will be free to all spectators. Entry is €10 for adults with free entry for children.
