Seskin Flyer proves best in exciting Navan finish

Seskin Flyer, from the Thurles yard of Pat Carey, is proving to be a fine money spinner for his owner Liam Phelan and he added to his tally when getting up close home to land the two mile 100-126 handicap Chase at Navan on Saturday to take his earnings close to the €50,000 mark.

Not out of the first four in eight starts since November, the son of Broadway Flier went to post a well backed favourite. Rider Barry Browne settled him just off the pace as Shrewdoperator cut out the early running. A mistake near the halfway point caused the latter to relinquish his advantage and he was joined by Seskin Flyer. Turning to face the judge, Shrewdoperator began to send out distress signals and dropped away but the Gordon Elliott runner Veinard entered the fray. Going the the final fence, Seskin Flyer looked booked for second place, however, he responded well to the urgings of Browne to get up in the dying strides and land the spoils by half a length.

This was an ultra game display by the winner who is home bred and a fine piece of training by Carey who has kept him fresh after a long season. The trainer who has a fine record with mares revealed post race that he is viewing a race at Thurles for him in a few weeks and since he is equally at home over hurdles he could take in a race over the minor obstacles as well.
