Newport on the cusp of promotion after two key wins
Following two massive victories over their closest rivals in the past week, Newport Town need just one point from their remaining home game against Regional to secure promotion from division 1B.
The Division 1B promotion race is as tight as could possibly be and it was a case of who could hold their nerve in the last few games and it was Newport who weathered the storm and remained calm to win the vital games.
First up was the visit of Hill Celtic last Thursday. The sides had already met twice this season with Newport winning the league game and Hill Celtic coming out on top in the Lawson Cup quarter-final. Newport made full use of home advantage and a big local support to comfortably and maybe surprisingly win the game 4-1.
Next up for Newport was the visit of Kilfrush to a sun-soaked Derryleigh Park on Sunday in a game that neither side could afford to lose and they didn't edging to a 3-2 success.
