Muyam Spirit opens account at Kilbeggan

Muyam Spirit, from the Denis Hogan stable, opened his account at the fifth time of asking when he took the opening two mile maiden hurdle at Kilbeggan on Friday evening.

Having failed to make the frame in any of his previous outings, the five-year-old enjoyed plenty of support in what looked a very open seven runner contest. Given a stylish ride by 7lb claimer Shane Mulcahy, he was never too far out of his ground before delivering his challenge after the second last flight of hurdles. At this point, the Gordon Elliott trained runner Amor Verdadero had just taken over but Mulcahy galvanised Muyam Spirit for a final onslaught and in a driving finish the combination defeated no less a man than Davy Russell aboard Amor Verdadero by a head.

This was a fine piece of riding by Mulcahy who looks excellent value for his riding allowance and with ordinary luck can carve out a decent living from this most competitive of occupations. While better maiden hurdles have been run, the winner could only beat what was in front of him. He showed a willing attitude and is in the right hands to further his winning account.
