Refs blow the whistle on season start over notification issue
By Padraig Ryan
The North Tipperary & District League season was due to commence last weekend but failed after local referee's withdrew their services.
Late on Tuesday night, news filtered through of the decision of the NT&DL referees to make themselves unavailable for the weekend’s fixtures due to a degree of unhappiness at the lateness of notice of which game each referee was assigned to.
Official communication from the NT&DL secretary John Murphy, regarding the postponement, came through on Thursday afternoon in the form of an email to all club secretaries.
“I regret to inform you that this weekend’s planned fixture list is now postponed. This is due to the appointed referees making themselves unavailable. The NT&DL did make attempts to resolve the current position but matters could not be progressed to a successful outcome. The NT&DL will endeavour to resolve these issues and inform club secretaries in due course.”
Understandably this postponement caused a degree of unhappiness amongst clubs prepared for the start of the new season and especially players and managers who plan their weekends around these games.
