Walsh recovering well as Tipp game is abandoned
By Rose Mannion
The All Ireland Senior Camogie Championship opener between Tipperary and Waterford had to be abandoned on Saturday evening at The Ragg after Tipperary corner forward Nicole Walsh suffered a head and neck injury in a freak accident during play.
The Borris-Ileigh player, who was having a great game, had just won possession when she fell heavily to the ground. After Tipp team doctor, Paul Scully and Waterford team doctor, Sinead Fitzpatrick attended to the player, and with the arrival of the ambulance, the referee Andrew Larkin from Cork, announced that the game would continue as soon as the player was removed from the pitch.
He also announced that with injury time on the clock there was eleven and a half minutes to be played. However, the medics decided to call on an air ambulance and at that stage both the referee and the two Croke Park representatives that were present decided to abandon the game and will be re-fixed for a later date.
On Sunday afternoon, Tipperary camogie confirmed Nicole Walsh had suffered a serious concussion but had been released from hospital and was recovering at home.
The Game
This was not a good performance from the home side who were trailing 1-15 to 0-14 at the time to a strong Waterford side who were far from the meek outfit that suffered a heavy loss in the Munster semi-final last month.
