MUNSTER SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Tipperary’s bid to add to their forty-two provincial hurling titles failed to materialise as last Sunday’s Munster Senior Hurling Championship Final went the way of the home side Limerick, who took the spoils on a 2-26 to 2-14 score-line. Despite four excellent performances in the round-robin series, Sunday’s uncharacteristic display by Tipp is but a blip on the radar and we commiserate with the team on the loss.

Tipperary’s goals came courtesy of captain Seamus Callanan (Drom & Inch) and John McGrath (Loughmore-Castleiney), while Brian Hogan (Lorrha-Dorrha) minding the net for Tipp made some outstanding saves over the course of the game. Congratulations to Jerome Cahill (Kilruane MacDonaghs) on making his senior championship debut when introduced in the second half.

That, then, brings a close to an otherwise successful Munster campaign for Tipperary this year. Each game played afforded the team and management the opportunity to learn more about themselves. Sunday was no different, as the focus has immediately shifted to the knockout stages of the championship.

That focus is primed singularly on the weekend of July 13/14 when Tipperary will play either Laois or Dublin in the All-Ireland Championship Quarter-Final. The Laois/Dublin preliminary quarter-final match will be played this Sunday in Portlaoise.

MUNSTER U20 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

A new campaign and new age grade will see Tipperary play Waterford in the Bord Gais Energy Munster U20 Hurling Championship semi-final in Semple Stadium on Tuesday next, July 9th with throw-in at 7:30pm.

As indicated this will be the first year of the change of grade to the lower age and that should bring huge interest in the championship. As winners of the final U21 All-Ireland championship, the Tipperary panel announced by manager Liam Cahill for the new season includes ten of last year’s successful squad.

The Tipperary U20 panel therefore is as follows; Craig Morgan (Capt.) - Kilruane MacDonaghs, Aaron Browne - Knockavilla-Donaskeigh Kickhams, Andrew Ormond - JK Brackens, Billy Seymour – Kiladangan, Bryan O’Mara - Holycross-Ballycahill, Cathal Bourke - Clonoulty-Rossmore, Ciaran Connolly - Loughmore-Castleiney, Conor Bowe - Moyne-Templetuohy, Conor McCarthy - Nenagh Éire Óg, Conor Whelan - Carrick Davins, Darragh Woods - Holycross-Ballycahill, Devon Ryan - Knockavilla-Donaskeigh Kickhams, Eoghan Connolly - Cashel King Cormacs, Eoin Collins - Drom & Inch, Gearóid O’Connor - Moyne-Templetuohy, Jake Morris - Nenagh Éire Óg, James Devaney - Borris-Ileigh, Jerome Cahill - Kilruane MacDonaghs, Joe Fogarty – Moneygall, John Ryan - Boherlahan-Dualla, Johnny Ryan - Arravale Rovers, Kian O’Kelly - Kilruane MacDonaghs, Kieran Breen - Knockavilla-Donaskeigh Kickhams, Kevin Maher - Borris-Ileigh, Kevin McCarthy – Toomevara, Max Hackett - Moycarkey-Borris, Michael Purcell - Thurles Sarsfields, Niall Heffernan - Golden-Kilfeacle, Paddy Cadell - JK Brackens, Ray McCormack - Borris-Ileigh, Robbie Quirke – Toomevara, Ronan Tucker – Burgess, Sean Hayes – Kiladangan, Sean Ryan - Templederry Kenyons and Stephen O’Brien - Éire Óg Annacarty-Donohill.

Pictured right is the Tipp U20 management team and some of the backroom, TJ Ryan - Selector, Tommy Ryan - S&C, Liam Cahill - Manager, Sean Corbett - Selector, Kevin O'Sullivan Goal Keeping Coach, Michael Bevans - Coach-Selector, while in front are Paddy Julian - Physio and John Durnan – Kitman.

TEAM TIPPERARY GAA RACE DAY

The Team Tipperary GAA Race Day at the Galway Races is on Monday, July 29th next and is the fifth Galway Races venture continuing very successful outings for the past 4 years.

The Galway Races Summer Festival is renowned as a premier and most colourful racing festival. While it is a major sporting event, it also appeals to a much wider audience than just the racing fans. With the Killanin Stand Suites, there is something for everyone whether you are entertaining family, friends or business clients. This is the ideal format for mixing business with pleasure, whilst surrounded by the atmosphere and excitement that is the Galway Races.

Past fundraising from the Galway Race Day has gone towards the completion of astro turf and floodlighting on the hurling wall in Dr. Morris Park in 2017 and new car parking facilities catering for 120 cars at the same venue in 2018.

Development plans for 2019 and onwards are in progress and the Team Tipperary GAA Race Day is now firmly established as a successful fundraising venture.

The planning application has been submitted for new facilities in the Kinane (Old) Stand as part of the Centre of Excellence adjacent to Dr. Morris Park and we await approval. Plans for extension and revamping of dressing rooms in Dr. Morris Park are currently being prepared for planning and it is hoped that work will commence before the end of 2019. With planning permission granted Tipperary GAA in partnership with LIT await grant approval for the new all-weather pitch on their Thurles Campus. Great work done and much more to do, all thanks to the tremendous support of our patrons.

If you or anyone you know is interested in racing, or just a good day out and who might take a seat or two or a table and support our fundraising efforts, please contact Tim Floyd, County Secretary, 087 2591747 secretary.tipperary@gaa.ie for bookings and further details.

KELLOGG'S CÚL CAMPS

Best wishes to all clubs taking part and running the Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps over the summer months as the camps get under way in earnest this week. Special thanks also to the Tipperary Coaching and Games and GDA’s for the wonderful work they do in promoting and organising the camps.

HANDBALL

The Open Inter Club Final was hosted at the weekend by Crinkle where the Ballina team, left, consisting of Noel Moroney, Declan Gleeson, Ger Coonan and David Hickey were up against Kells from Co. Meath. Ballina got off to a great start and they troubled the Meath men early on but Kells with three senior All Ireland champions in their team pulled back the aces and went on to win 77-56. Well done however to the Ballina lads who had a great Munster campaign and they will have gained great experience playing in a senior club final.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Munster Inter Provincial Wheelchair Hurling.

It has been confirmed that the rescheduled date for this event is September 14th in Newport and as soon as information becomes available it will be forwarded to all clubs in the county.
