Denis Hogan causes upset at Tipperary

Having made my annual pilgrimage on Wednesday up the hill of Crockafotha which is home to Bellewstown races, I failed to come up with a local winner so I moved tent to Tipperary on Thursday evening where Denis Hogan caused a mild upset when taking the first division of the three mile 80-95 handicap hurdle with the 12/1 chance Helly Hansum.

Settled in mid division, the daughter of Fame And Glory improved to be right on the premises turning to face the judge. At this point she looked to be galloping all over her rivals and this assessment was correct as she took over after the second last flight and pulled away to win handsomely by two and a half lengths from the favourite Tugnsten Kid.

Having failed to win her bumper, Helly Hansum had a couple of decent efforts over hurdles. Like the progeny of her sire, staying is clearly her game and now that she had got her head in front she can be placed to further success.

It also proved to be an evening to remember for winning rider Paul Cawley who was recording his first success as a professional having received his licence just a week earlier. On this evidence he looks a fine horseman so this victory could be the first of many for him.
