Kilruane MacDonaghs fought off a stubborn late comeback from Toomevara to hold on and claim the County Intermediate Camogie League title in a goal fest last Saturday afternoon.

Two goals from veteran Elaine Young inside the first 13 minute settled down Toome’ early and they looked like they were going to press home that early scoring advantage, but a decisive response from Claire Kennedy with two goals of her own was the Kilruane response and they wouldn’t not surrender game from here.

This game had it all in terms of excitement with both sets of players playing their part in a cracker, but Kilruane just had that bit more in the locker and had all the answers to the Toomevara fight back going down the home stretch.

But Toomevara came blisteringly out of the blocks early and despite Niamh Williams opening the scoring in the seventh minute, Toome went on a scoring flurry with Jill Anne Quirke, Gemma McCarthy (free) and two goals from Elaine Young – both set up by Quirke – the first coming from quick thinking from a Quirke free to set Young in on goal, while the second had more fortune to it with a Quirke effort at goal half blocked, only for Young to gather and finish; Toome ahead 2-2 to 0-1 after 15 minutes.
