These players have real Tipperary stuff in them – Cahill
TIPPERARY v WEXFORD
Sunday 4th August
Nowlan Park, Kilkenny
Throw-in @ 1.45pm (E.T. & Result)
Referee: Cathal McAllister (Cork)
“Happy and relieved,” was how Tipperary under 20 hurling manager Liam Cahill described last Tuesday's Munster Final victory over Cork.
It wasn't the most complete performance but considering they had to come from behind on three occasions to claim the first title in the grade, it came down to guts and character which came to the fore in the dying minutes.
“We did a lot of good things but we probably weren't as clinical as we needed to be at stages. We missed a couple of obvious scores, a couple of handling errors contributed to scores for Cork.
“But it's Munster Championship, Tipp and Cork with massive intensity and the team just kept digging away. There are an incredibly honest bunch, regardless of what happens in the rest of the year. Obviously we want to win the All Ireland, that's our goal but this proves that these guys have the stuff, the real Tipperary stuff to go ahead to a higher level to play for Tipperary in time.”
Tipperary have to come down off the high pretty quickly to face Wexford in this weekends All Ireland semi-final and Liam Cahill feels the players are strong enough to cope with the relatively quick turnaround.
“These fella's are good guys, they are high achievers and ambitious,” he said.
“There are players on the panel this evening that were very close to making the 24. They are going to give up options over the next couple of days and our panel is always open ended and changing. If anyone shows up well in training they come in. Niall Heffernan came on this evening and was immense and has been showing that in training. Darragh Woods didn't make the 24 against Waterford but came in this evening and one or two balls went astray but what a score from under the stand to put us back in the match.
“All these young fella's have their strengths in some many different ways."
