Newport progress in Munster Cup as Nenagh crash out
Limerick District League Review
There were contrasting fortunes for Tipperary’s two teams from the Limerick District League in Nenagh AFC and Newport Town, in the first round of the Munster Junior Cup last Sunday.
Newport Town made it through to the second round following a comfortable 3-0 win over fellow Premier 'A' side, Hill Celtic in Derryleigh Park.
Newport played well in the first half and dominated the opening 45 minutes and deservedly took a 2-0 lead into the break, courtesy of goals from Paul Ryan in the 17th & 19th minutes. The first was a good header from a cross from the left by Jimmy Fyfe. The second followed less than two minutes later when he was played through and found himself one-on-one with the keeper and placed a low shot past the keeper. Newport were good value for this lead and in truth, could easily have had another couple if we had been a bit more clinical in front of goals.
Having played Hill Celtic numerous times over the past twelve months, Newport knww that they would come back into the game and the second half was a much tighter affair with the visitors dominating long passages of play. However, a good defensive effort by Newport frustrated the city side and it was good to secure another clean sheet. Newport made the game safe in the 81st minute when Paul Ryan, latched onto a defensive error and calmly slotted home to grab his hat-trick. A good win and now look forward to the visit to North Cork in round 2 to face Charleville after they beat Moyross 4-2.
Nenagh AFC bowed out at the first hurdle going down out after a penalty shoot-out defeat to second tier Corbally United in Brickfields on Sunday.
