Green light for Nenagh residential development

Planning permission has been granted for the development of 36 residential units on a vacant site behind Nenagh's Great National Abbey Court Hotel.

Tipperary Co Council last week granted conditional permission to Eko Integrated Services Ltd for the construction of 16 semi-detached three-bedroom two-storey houses and eight three-bedroom two-storey terraced houses, along with 12 two-bedroom apartments over four storeys. New entrance gates and an access road to the existing holiday homes behind the hotel, as well as associated works are planned for the vacant site, which is bordered to the east by the Abbey Court Hotel lodges and to the west by the old Lidl, now Homesavers supermarket site.

It is understood that the developer will provide three units to the council for social housing in accordance with Part V of the Planning & Development Act.

The planning application was accompanied by several reports, including a flood risk assessment, development impact statement and landscape report. In a submission on the plan, Iarnród Éireann requested the installation of a 2.4m-high concrete block wall or palisade fence between the houses and nearby railway track.
An Ennis-based partnership, Eko Integrated Services had also sought to build 32 houses at Cloneygowney, Portroe. However, this application was withdrawn earlier in the year.

Local TD Alan Kelly this week welcomed the granting of planning permission for the new housing in Nenagh, which he said would form part of a plan to enhance the general area around the hotel site.

“In October last year, I was delighted to announce the details of this development as part of a multi-million euro investment on the Abbey Court site,” Deputy Kelly stated. “It is great to see things progressing. Development like this in the town of Nenagh is always good news.”
