Newport march on in FAI Junior Cup

Limerick District League Review

Newport Town advanced into round 3 of the FAI Junior Cup following a 4-2 win at home over Premier 'A' league leaders, Moyross United, in front of a decent crowd in Derryleigh Park on Sunday.

The visitors won the opening league game of the season 4-3 after Newport relinquished a 3-1 lead and this game was expected to be a tough affair.
Newport opened the scoring in the fourth minute, when an Elliott Slattery free-kick on the edge of the box was deflected to the net. The home side were playing well and exerting pressure on the Moyross side and their efforts were rewarded on the half hour mark, when Kevin Connolly rifled home a slick pass from Jake Dillon on the edge of the box, after some good work by Brian O’Sullivan in the middle of the park.
However, like in the first game of the season, Moyross proved to be tough opposition and when Shane O'Loughlin curled in a well-struck free-kick in the 52
nd minute, their tails were up and they went up a gear.
