Murphy joins Lowry Team
Fianna Fáil's local election candidate in the town of Nenagh, Brendan Murphy, has formed a new alliance with Tipperary's consistent poll topping Independent TD, Michael Lowry.
Mr Murphy, who became disillusioned with Fianna Fáil and resigned from the party to become an Independent after it failed to win a single seat in the Nenagh Municipal District in the local elections last May, said he was now joining the Lowry Team as "an independent community activist".
Mr Murphy, a businessman based in Nenagh, said the refrain on the doorsteps from voters he canvassed as a Fianna Fáil candidate during his local election campaign was: "‘If you want something done, go to Michael Lowry."
The Nenagh man said political allegiance for him was always going to "come second" to his mission of helping people in his community.
Mr Murphy added: "In a follow-up meeting with Michael Lowry, it became obvious that we shared similar ideals of working within the community and supporting the most vulnerable in society. It was clear from our discussions, and witnessing first-hand his energy to help others through his dedicated team, that he is a highly effective public servant where the constituent is in charge. This is somewhat refreshing in politics today and is a vision of public service to which I aspire.”
"In practical terms, Michael Lowry will extend all the support I need to work as an effective community activist in the Nenagh Local Electoral Area,” said Mr Murphy.
Deputy Lowry said he was delighted to welcome Mr Murphy as a member of the Lowry Team. "When Brendan rang me for a meeting I agreed to have a private discussion about his future in politics. He conveyed his disappointment and dissatisfaction with the level of service and support he had been receiving from within Fianna Fail."
Mr Lowry added: "I found Brendan to be very sincere and genuine in his desire to be an active member of his community. I was struck by his ambition to contribute to improving his local area. He has a great knowledge and understanding of all matters local. He has identified issues of public concern and is keen to work on finding and implementing solutions. I was impressed with his attitude and work ethic. I am happy to extend my services and the support of my organisation to Brendan to enable him to assist those that seek his assistance."
