Oh meow - Nenagh cats to appear in film!

Two cats owned by a veterinary nurse working at Summerhill Veterinary Clinic in Nenagh are to appear in a film to be released at the end of the month.
The two hairless Sphynx cats, owned by Aimee Henson, are set to feature in 'Gretel and Hansel: A Grim Fairy Tale', an American dark fantasy horror flick due to hit the screen on January 31st.
The cats, named Blue and his sister, Donald (yes, his sister!), will be appearing in the film, based on the German folklore tale, "Hansel and Gretel" by the Brothers Grimm. The cats also feature in the trailer of the film.
The film is directed by Oz Perkins and stars Sophia Lillis and Sam Leakey in the main character roles. Gretel and Hansel enter a dark wood in order to find work and food to assistant their poor parents when the stumble on a witch.
Shooting at Ardmore Studios took place during the latter end of 2018 and involved several trips for Aimee and her two cats from her home in Borrisokane to the studios in Co Wicklow.
While Blue and Donald – who look exactly alike – were both requried by the director for filming purposes, they appear as the one Sphynx cat which features in the movie. "I don't know exactly what part they play, but I imagine they play the cat that belongs to the witch in the story," says Aimee.
The cats were sourced by an agent working for the film crew. Aimee explains: "A friend of mine had cats signed up with the agent and when she left the country she passed on my details and the agent contacted me."
Blue and Donald have been living with Aimee for the past seven years. "They are very well socilised from a young age and are so easygoing," says Aimee.
Her love for the hairless cats goes bck to when she was much younger growing up in her native Loughrea. Her father had always resisted taking in a cat, as he didn't want it shedding hairs all over the house. However, Aimee's mother got around him by acquiring a hairless Sphynx cat. Now, Aimee herself has four Sphynx cats who live in harmony with her two dogs. She says: "People might think that Sphynx cats are really weird, but any of my friends who have met them say, 'Oh my God, they're so like dogs'. They follow me around the house and they are lovely, sweet little creatures."
So, look for the Nenagh cats, Blue and Donald, coming to a cinema near you soon!
