Appeal for patrons to support Nenagh arts project
Joanna Ryan-Purcell, founder of the Blue Door Studio, is an artist, writer, performer, theatre director and events manager who has a vision. In June 2018 Joanna launched the Blue Door project. The Blue Door is a place where people are free to express who they are. Joanna designs, organises and manages events and festivals under the name of The Blue Door Sessions. Joanna’s intention behind her events and festivals is to create a world or an atmosphere where people can feel free to be who they are.
In Joanna’s words:
The world is so judgemental and creativity is being crushed everywhere we look. Creativity is at the very centre of who we are. We are creative beings and if we shut down our creativity, we are shutting down access to who we truly are.
I am creating a space, through my events and festivals, where the atmosphere and designs that I have created reignites the creativity that has been suffocated by this bleak, grey world. Through my colourful backdrops and my cosy set designs, people rediscover their passions because they rediscover colour.
This is what the Blue Door is. It is like another dimension that I create where people can be free to be who they are and express themselves without judgement.
I also want to stand up for independent artists and their original work. Artists are undervalued and underpaid in our current world and I want to change that. Art is important and it is the only way we can come together, connect and heal as a society.
So, through my Blue Door events and festivals I am bringing the community into the centre of art; they are surrounded by it, inspired by it and it changes their life, even just a little. Art can heal and through the Blue Door we, as a community, can come together and start experiencing what freedom of expression is like. A revolution needs to happen and I am starting one with my Blue Door by creating a space where people can be free to be who they are.
My events and festivals will take place in and around the town of Nenagh, Co Tipperary. To me, Nenagh is a blank canvas ready for me to splash my colour all over it. I have done a number of events to date where people have experienced the freedom of the Blue Door. I want to create a festival where people can enter and explore the magical world I can see inside my head. I want to create and build this festival to the level of what I see inside my head. It is a world of freedom, a world where there is no judgement, a world where people express exactly who they are with no shame and artists can present, show and perform their original work to an appreciative audience.
This is the type of festival I want to build and I can see it so clearly inside my head and I cannot wait to start designing and building everything for the festival. I have a degree in performing arts and technical theatre, I have painted many large murals and backdrops and I am currently in the middle of an events management diploma.
With all of these skills and training, along with my already successful Blue Door events, I can assure you that I will be able to create this magical world to perfection.
In order to make the festival a reality and to continue creating a space for people to be who they are, I need patrons to support my vision. The funds will go towards equipment and materials to create and build the festivals and events and fees for people involved in building and running these events and festivals: musicians, artists, builders, events managers, sound engineers, lighting technicians, health and safety managers, festival directors, performers, etc. With my experience of directing shows and managing events I can create a magical experience for anyone who wants to explore. If you have a passion for the arts and a wish to see change, please, support my vision
