Tributes paid to General Election candidate
Tributes have been paid to General Election candidate Marese Skehan who passed away suddenly at her home in Thurles on Monday.
Fellow Thurles candidate Deputy Michael Lowry described Ms Shekhan as a prominent and much-admired member of the community.
Deputy Lowry said: “I have known Marese for many years. She cared passionately about the plight of the underprivileged and disadvantaged and was always a great source of support and assistance to those in need. Her warmth touched the hearts of many people and she will be sadly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her. Amidst news of the postponement of voting in the Tipperary Constituency in the General Election, we must remain very conscious of the fact that Tipperary lost a very capable and dynamic lady today. Marese played a significant role in the lives of her family, loved ones, friends and supporters. Her sudden and untimely passing leaves a void in so many lives that can never filled.”
Independent TD Seamus Healy commented: “She was particularly well-regarded for her work as a women’s rights advocate. She contributed greatly to her community through her work in many voluntary organisations, paying particular care to those in need and the elderly. My thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time.”
Labour TD Alan Kelly added: “I wish to offer my deepest sympathies to Marese’s family and all who knew her. The news of Marese’s death has been a huge shock to the people of Tipperary this evening.”
Meanwhile, canvassing in Tipperary has been suspended as a mark of respect following the death of Ms Skehan. Details of a re-arranged date for the election of five TDs for the Tipperary constituency are expected in the coming days.
