Tipperary GAA Scene
ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE
With last Sunday’s game switched from MacDonagh Park to Semple Stadium, Tipperary recorded their first win of the Allianz Hurling League with a 3-27 to 0-16 victory over Westmeath and in doing so set the side up nicely for two stern tests coming down the tracks. With captain Séamus Callanan (Drom & Inch) showing tremendous leadership in his first start of the campaign, Tipperary’s healthy score differential will help boost the stats should they be required once the league rounds have been completed. Top scorer on the day for Tipp was Jason Forde (Silvermines) with 0-14 (9f, 1 s/l) with the goals coming from Jake Morris (Nenagh Éire Óg) 1-3, Cian Darcy (Kilruane MacDonaghs) and Séamus Callanan 1-1 apiece. Sunday also marked the welcome return of Noel McGrath (Loughmore-Castleiney) back on the field of play.
Tipperary are at home again next Sunday where they will play Waterford in round 5, though both counties still have a postponed fixture from round 3 each, yet to be considered. So, as it stands Waterford are in second place in the league table on 6 points, the same as Limerick though the Treaty men have the minimum scoring advantage of plus 12 keeping them on top to Waterford’s plus 11. Tipperary are in fourth place with plus 16 on 2 points behind Cork in third on 4 points who have plus 3 scoring in their favour.
Focusing in on Sunday’s game, there have been 46 previous league meetings between Tipperary and Waterford. Tipperary holds a strong advantage having won 34 of these encounters to 9 for Waterford and there were 3 draws. A look at the last ten meetings reveals the following set of results -
2009 at Walsh Park - Tipperary 2-13 Waterford 1-12
2010 at Semple Stadium - Tipperary 1-19 Waterford 2-16
2011 at Semple Stadium - Tipperary 1-20 Waterford 0-18
2012 at Semple Stadium - Tipperary 0-31 Waterford 2-15
2013 at Walsh Park - Waterford 1-14 Tipperary 0-16
2014 at Semple Stadium - Tipperary 2-13 Waterford 0-16
2015 at Nowlan Park - Waterford 1-19 Tipperary 2-15 (Semi-final)
2016 at Semple Stadium - Waterford 1-18 Tipperary 1-17
2017 at Walsh Park - Tipperary 1-18 Waterford 0-15
2018 at Semple Stadium - Tipperary 1-20 Waterford 1-11
The scene is set for what should be a somewhat unique occasion as it also represents the first return to Semple Stadium for Liam Cahill since he took over the Déise managerial position.
Best wishes to the Tipperary team and management on Sunday and we appeal to supporters to come out on Sunday behind the team as it really does matter on the day. The referee will be Séan Stack (Dublin).
Adult pre-purchase tickets are available up to midnight on Saturday night for €15 and adult match day tickets are €20, U16’s go free.
ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE
The Tipperary footballers put in a superb effort on Saturday night last as they played out a thriller against Cork in Semple Stadium in round 4 of the Allianz Football League and were most unlucky not to get something out of it in terms of league points, losing by the minimum on a 3-13 to 0-21 before an attendance of 875.
It’s back to the highway’s on Sunday next as Tipperary travel to Glennon Brothers Pearse Park to play Longford in round 5. While Cork top the table on 8 points, Longford are one of four teams on 5 points with David Power’s side next on 3 points. A win on Sunday would be the perfect tonic for his improving side who are playing a very attractive and attacking brand of football.
Best wishes to the side and management on Sunday and the referee will be Niall Mc Kenna.
Tickets are €10 and U16’s go free.

SYMPATHY
We express our sympathy to the family and friends of the late Bridget Ryan (nee Stakelum) Borrisoleigh who passed away over the weekend. Steeped in GAA tradition, her late husband Tim and brother Pat were All-Ireland winners with Tipperary. Keeping up that tradition, her sons Pat, Bobby and Aidan all donned the blue and gold jersey, emulating the feats of their father and uncles by winning All-Ireland medals as well.
Ar dheis Dé go raimh a anam.
