Last gasp Ronan fires Sallypark to Cup glory
SOCCER: North Tipperary & District League Cup Final
Sallypark Odhrans 2
Borroway Rovers 1
Sallypark Odhráns FC completed their remarkable campaign in this seasons Tipperary Cup by claiming the claiming the Kevin Fogarty Cup for a second time with another upset win over Borroway Rovers in Holycross on Sunday.
The result caps an incredible fairy-tale run in the competition for Sallypark. In a hugely challenging run to the final, Eugene Foley’s side dispatched Thurles Town in the last 16 before beating last years and this years premier league champions Killavilla United and Nenagh Celtic in the quarter and semi-finals respectively with Borroway becoming the fourth top tier side to fall to the division 1 out fit.
There was a large turnout for this game despite the cold and the rain, and credit must go to the Holycross FC members who had the field in immaculate condition despite the poor weather of recent weeks.
The first half was a cagey battling affair with neither side enjoying any major opportunities on goal. Joe Shanahan was outstanding in the midfield for Sally while Daniel Keogh was showing his excellent ability providing a constant outlet at right full back. For Borroway Darren McGuire was proving a big threat and the superb movement of Callum O’Connor and Tommy McGuire up front was keeping the Sallypark defence on its toes.
At the other end Séan Ryan was full of dangerous running for Sally, replicating his form from the earlier rounds, while he was well supported by the strength and work of David Young. Borroway centre halves Anthony Walker and David McGuire coped well with the threat however, and showed great their class and technique to pass it out from the back on multiple occasions where they initially appeared under pressure.
