New Labour Party leader to be known today
Tipperary TD and Portroe native Alan Kelly will find out today is he’s bid to become the new Labour Party leader is successful.
Dublin-based TD Aodhán Ó Ríordáin is the other challenger in the race that will see votes being counted in Dublin this afternoon by the party’s legal officer with the candidates watching on via teleconference.
Almost 2,000 party members have voted in the contest to replace Brendan Howlin, who stepped down after February’s General Election, which saw the party return six TDs, one less than it enjoyed in the previous Dáil.
Deputy Kelly's campaign has focused on returning Labour to its core values with an emphasis also on health and housing while Deputy Ó Ríordáin targeted the party’s relevance to young people and improving the conditions of low paid workers.
