Contract awarded for Roscrea's Market Square works

Tipperary County Council is pleased to announce that Rathcabin Tarmacadam Ltd has been awarded the contract for the enhancement works to Market Square in Roscrea.

These works are planned to commence on July 27th on a phased basis to minimise disruption to businesses and traffic in the town. The project is 100% funded by Tipperary County Council and its proposed commencement has been warmly received by local councillors as a welcome investment for the revitalisation and regeneration of Roscrea town.

The public realm will be improved and new traffic management arrangements will be put in place at the Market Square junction to make the area more accommodating and safer for pedestrians and road users.

This project has evolved and developed over a number of years with invaluable support and input from Roscrea Chamber and members of the public through a consultation process which greatly aided the design of the scheme.

In 2017, the council engaged Roadplan Consulting Ltd to assist and advise on the detailed design of the project.
The physical works will include:-

Widening of footpaths to provide a better pedestrian environment and new high-quality paving;

Realignment of Market Square Junction to improve traffic circulation and pedestrian crossings;

Provision of three controlled pedestrian crossings;

The provision of dedicated loading and short-term car parking/set down areas;

Provision of street furniture and soft landscaping.

 

The establishment of safer walking is a particular priority for this project given the high footfall at this busy junction and the prominent businesses and post office in the area. The reorganisation of the Market Square junction will significantly reduce traffic speed with wider footpaths and an upgraded public realm will help create a more attractive environment for all. In making these changes Market Square will transition from a traffic dominated junction to a pleasant shopper/visitor destination and meeting hub.
