Planning extension granted for Roscrea brewery
Tipperary Co Council has granted an extension of duration of planning permission for a microbrewery at the site of a former temperance hall in Roscrea.
Damien and Sandra Munroe have permission for the change of use and restoration of the old bridewell (gaol) and temperance hall at Gaol Road from an educational facility/offices to offices and a microbrewery for the manufacture of craft beer. Internal alterations, the demolition of inapproporiate additions and construction of a new extension are included in the application, which relates to development that would comprise works to a Protected Structure.
Opening as a gaol in 1815, the building was subsequently used to stage concerts before becoming a temperance hall in the early 1900s, when non-alcoholic drinks were sold to farmers visiting the market in Roscrea. Though its use has changed many times since, it is still known locally as the temperance hall.
The Munroes are seeking to make use of the long-idle building with their microbrewey plan, which would add to Roscrea's history of brewing beer and distilling whiskey.
The council last month agreed to extend the duration of planning permission until 2025.
