Borrisokane church sold in auction

Borrisokane Church attracted swift bidding at an online auction, greatly surpassing its AMV to eventually sell at €115,250.

Ten bidders hammered out some 186 bids for the nineteenth century building in a sale facilitated by Nenagh-based agent REA Eoin Dillon. The owner was Shannon Commercial Properties and the reserve was set at €10,000.

The bidding increments started at €1,000 from €10,000 to €50,000 then €500 from €50,000 to €100,000 and then in €250 bids. It is understood that the purchaser is local. The property attracted widespread interest from church/religious groups, to people interested in setting up art galleries, recording studios, live music venue, educational, workshop, sales, offices and storage use.

The most common interest was in converting the former church into a residence. Constructed in 1832, the Old Mill Road church has road frontage and is surrounded by beautiful mature trees. It was deconsecrated in the 1970s and served more recently as a community resource centre.

The site runs to 0.7 acres (0.28 ha) and the building has a footprint of approximately 454.20 square metres (4,889 sq ft). As you enter the building from the front (north facing) there are offices and store rooms on each side of the corridor with a WC. Double doors open out into the main area of the building with some original stained glass windows and a magnificent painted ceiling still in place.

There are two further offices, computer room, painting studio, ladies and men's toilets, and sacristy to the rear. The back corridor has a door to the rear and stairs to two storage rooms and a balcony. Outside there is a tarmac car park to the front and car access to the rear of the building.

The 0.7-acre site is surrounded by mature trees and shrubs. In advertising the property, REA Eoin Dillon stated that the former church and Protected Structure may be suitable for a number of uses such as a restaurant, bespoke dwelling, funeral home or apartments, subject of course to obtaining the necessary planning permission. As the property is a protected building, the relevant restrictions apply.
