Terryglass congratulated on Pride award

Leas-Cathaoirleach of Tipperary Co Council’s Nenagh Municipal District Cllr John Carroll recently congratulated Terryglass Village on winning the Pride of Place Awards 2020.

“This is a great achievement for a small village, especially after such a difficult year,” Cllr Carroll said at a recent function in Terryglass.

“The award is a testament to the huge amount of work and the efforts of this committee but also to the generation that have come before them. It was fitting that that the award came in a year that marked the 50th anniversary of the Terryglass Improvement Association.

“The Terryglass Improvement Association (TIA) began its quest to improve the village amenities for the community 50 years ago. The purpose was to mobilise the community to access Lough Derg and to build a harbour.

“These amenities were intended for the locals and visitors alike and that mission to enhance the village continues to this day. As you look around today, now it is obvious that this has been achieved.

“The new playground, the Littlewood Trail, the Harbour Refurbishment, new street lighting, the community hall as well as the many great festivals and events that take place here each year represent a fantastic community spirit and collaboration in the village.

“The amount of administrative work that goes on behind the scenes to achieve the funding for these projects is immense but Terryglass has always rose to that challenge. I understand that there was an audit of a project here only last week and the Department officials were truly impressed by the way that the local committee had managed and overseen the project.

“Terryglass won the national Tidy Towns award as well as the Best Kept Village a number of times. Over the last number of years, they have utilised the Town and Village Renewal Scheme to develop 11 new projects in the village and harbour, including a children’s playground.

“While Terryglass has just 243 residents, they punch well above their weight with participation and active support. The groups works closely with other active community groups including the Community Hall, Terryglass/Kilbarron Historical Society, Terryglass Living Community, Terryglass Conservation Club, Angling and Conservation Club and Lough Derg Water Sports

“I would like to thank everyone here for the effort that they have made this year and over the last number of years. Congratulations on this great achievement and we wish you the very best of luck over the next number of years.”
