Forest walk unveiled in Garrykennedy
Minister Humphreys visits lakeside village
Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys, TD, visited Garrykennedy on November 3, where she unveiled a plaque in respect of the Garrykennedy Forest Walk project, funded under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.
The project was delivered by Tipperary County Council in conjunction with the Garrykennedy Tidy Towns Committee. This was one of a number of events attended by the Minister in County Tipperary on November 3 as part of a nationwide tour to promote ‘Our Rural Future’, the Government’s rural development strategy, which aims to revitalise towns and villages, promote remote working and ensure balanced regional development. Rural Development projects in County Tipperary have received investment of over €7 million from the Department of Rural and Community Development.
The Garrykennedy Forest Walk received funding of €45,540, which was supplemented by Tipperary County Council in order to facilitate a range of amenity area improvements. Works undertaken included improvements of the forest walk and the marina, replacement of bridges and provision of benches.
This forest walk encompasses the very best of an outdoor pursuit. On entry to the forest walk the visitor gets to walk along a forest trail that passes very close, and in some parts provides direct access, to the shoreline of Lough Derg. There is the opportunity to have a picnic at the picnic bench overlooking the lake. The forest, with its proximity to the shoreline, provides a beautiful location to be at one with nature. The looped walk provides the visitor with the opportunity to have a leisurely stroll or a brisk walk in the tranquil surroundings of Garrykennedy.
Works were carried out by MR Plant Hire in association with Paul Keane, Executive Engineer, Tipperary County Council. Also present at the unveiling were Cllr Marie Murphy, Cathaoirleach, Tipperary County Council; Cllr Michael O’Meara, Cathaoirleach Nenagh Municipal District; Mr Joe MacGrath, Chief Executive, Tipperary County Council; Deputy Alan Kelly; Senator Garret Ahearn and Cllr John Carroll, Nenagh Municipal District.
