Council ready for winter weather
Director of Services Marcus O'Connor assured last week's meeting of Tipperary Co Council that the local authority is adequately stocked with salt to treat freezing roads.
Tipperary Co Council spends €1 million every year salting some 1,000km of road - more than any county other than Donegal. It would not be logistically possible to do any more, Mr O'Connor said.
Twelve units are involved in salting and pre-salting selected routes around the county. Duty engineers monitor the weather forecast and decide when to send out salting units, generally when the temperature falls below one or two degrees.
