Brendan O’Donoghue is the Irish Amateur champion for a record fourth time.

O’Donoghue wins Irish Amateur Snooker title for a fourth time

Brendan O’Donoghue made history last weekend by winning the Irish Amateur Snooker Championship title for a fourth time.

He joins an elite list of just three players to win the title on four occasions, including former professional David Morris from Kilkenny who he beat in the final, and Martin McCrudden from Dublin.

The Nenagh Institute clubman came from 5-4 down to dominate a final frame decider to win this title twenty years after winning his first Irish amateur title.

It caps off a great year for Brendan O’Donoghue as he also just won the Nenagh Open last month when he recently beat professional Michael Judge in the final.

It bodes well for the club’s defence of its Munster Club title in the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney on the 13th & 14th of January 2022. The ‘A’ team will consist of Brendan O’Donoghue, Tom Gleeson, Mark Walsh, Tony Seymour, and Paidi Kelly who will be going for a record tenth Munster club title. Good luck to the lads.

Also, the ‘B’ team who won the Munster Championship division title also in 2019 are getting their preparations in order for their move to the premiership division in January where they will face Rathkeale, St John’s B (Limerick), and Thurles.

They played an inter-county challenge match last weekend. After a long day’s play and sharing matches 2-2, New Institute emerged winners with Chris Hayden coming from 2-1 down to beat recent Limerick intermediate champion Kevin McMahon 3-2. Well done to all. Thanks to Mike White and Patsy Farrell for organising the challenge and to Mike also for sponsoring the trophy.
