Gardaí probe Nenagh stabbing

Gardaí are investigating the alleged stabbing of a man in Nenagh in an attack that prompted the force to call in members of its Armed Response Unit and cordon off one of the town’s main streets.

The gun-carrying gardaí rushed to the scene of an incident at 4.40pm in Sarsfield Street on Sunday last after reports of an attack on a 41-year-old male. A woman in her early 40s who was taken into custody for questioning shortly after the incident was still being held as we went to press on Tuesday afternoon. She is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Gardaí, who were swiftly on the scene, discovered a smashed ground floor window in the house where the alleged stabbing took place.

One line of inquiry being pursued is whether the victim may have jumped through the glass in the window and out onto the public street to escape his attacker.

The scene was preserved following the incident as gardaí conducted forensic examinations in the house and street outside.

Sergeant Declan O’ Carroll of Nenagh Garda Station confirmed that a male had sustained a number of “serious injuries” and that the property where the alleged attack occurred was damaged.

An ambulance was called and the victim was rushed to University Hospital Limerick where he is still being treated. His condition has been described as stable.

The incident comes on a week when local gardaí announced a ramping up of their drive to tackle anti-social behaviour occurring in Nenagh following recent complaints. And they have appealed for the public’s help in their investigation into a spate of burglaries in the locality last week.

Following a number of complaints to the local station, Sergeant O’ Carroll confirmed that an extremely “proactive approach” was currently being adopted in relation to clamping down on anti-social behaviour. He said gardaí had increased their patrols in the town. He confirmed that four individuals had been issued with Anti-Social Behaviour Orders on Tuesday of last week. It is understood that part of the focus on the clampdown is on youths causing a nuisance for shop owners and customers, particularly in the town centre.
